How to open up the gateway to smart homes?

Since Google's acquisition of Nest, the smart home industry has entered a period of explosive growth. Emerging internet companies and traditional home furnishing enterprises alike have rushed to deploy smart home technologies, eager to seize the entry point. From smart lighting to smart TVs and smart routers, a range of smart hardware products are seen by manufacturers as the gateway to the future smart home. However, these products have not demonstrated sufficient dominance. In other words, while the entry point to the smart home is crowded, we remain largely outside the door.

As a crucial component of the smart home, smart lighting devices, due to their wide distribution and the largest number of nodes involved, have a relatively mature market. The application of smart lighting is mainly concentrated in the commercial and public utilities sectors, with hotels, exhibition venues, municipal projects, and road transportation being the most prominent examples. However, there is still a long way to go before smart lighting enters every household.

Smart TVs, as the most basic component of the modern home, seem to have a natural reason to become the connection hub of the smart home. However, due to limitations in content resources and network bandwidth, the user experience provided by smart TVs is not ideal. If even a basic TV roaming/video viewing function isn't fully realized, how can one even dream of smart home integration?

Currently, smart routers seem to be the most likely product to unify the smart home gateway. As the "toilet" of the network upstream, they can distribute traffic and connect devices, which is undoubtedly their biggest advantage. However, it's undeniable that while many different brands of smart routers have emerged, they haven't fundamentally progressed far beyond the innovative features of traditional routers. Simply put, they're not smart enough.

Therefore, the question of "who is the smart home gateway" is a false one. What we should really care about is what kind of product truly deserves the title of smart home gateway. The "2015 China Smart Home Online Exhibition," hosted by OFweek on December 16-17, brought together numerous companies and products from across the entire industry chain, showcasing the latest, hottest, and most innovative ideas. The exhibition was divided into five zones: "Smart Home Systems," "Smart Home," "Building Automation Systems and Products," "Intelligent Integrated Applications," and "Smart Hardware," covering the industry's most cutting-edge applications. These representative technologies and products can offer valuable reference and inspiration to practitioners currently pondering and hesitating within the industry.

The smart hardware products mentioned above, besides their individual shortcomings, also face the same significant challenges. Relatively speaking, my country's smart home ecosystem remains highly fragmented, lacking a unified communication protocol standard. Individual smart products operate independently, with effective interconnectivity occurring in various locations. High prices and a lack of user experience hinder the promotion and popularization of smart home products in the market, resulting in a situation of "cold on the outside, hot on the inside" connectivity. Furthermore, network security monitoring is a major pain point for all users.

Regarding these pressing issues facing the smart home industry, what progress have we made in the future, and in which direction should we strive?
